Florida Self Employed Health Insurance

March 10th, 2010

Florida residents that are self employed and looking for health insurance have a number of options available to them. Be aware that depending upon your health, your age, and other factors unique to your particular situation there is no hard and fast rule as to which option is best for you. However, there are some general guidelines that will help you make the best Florida self employed health insurance decision.

The first Florida health insurance option available to the self employed is to simply apply for an individual health insurance policy. The benefit to applying for an individual health insurance policy is that individual health insurance rates in Florida are very competitive.

The downside to attempting to purchase an individual health insurance policy in the state of Florida is that you must be healthy. According to FL law, a health insurance company can decline your application for an individual health insurance policy based on prior medical history (pre-existing conditions), height and weight restrictions, and other health related criteria.

That means if you have cancer, diabetes, weight problems, or a host of other physical ailments then you will be denied coverage with a Florida individual health insurance policy. (Any unscrupulous agent that tries to tell you other wise is misrepresenting whatever product he or she is trying to sell you as health insurance when in fact it is probably a discount health plan or a health insurance indemnity plan with very limited coverage).

The second Florida health insurance option available to the self employed is to apply for a Florida group health insurance plan. In Florida, any group of 2 employer/employees or more is considered eligible for a Florida small group health insurance. (If it is just you: 1 self employed person functioning as a sole proprietor in the state of Florida then you have a different option open to you – see option 3 below). The benefit to applying for a Florida small group health insurance policy is that that certain health issues that can signal an automatic decline on the individual health insurance side will not signal an automatic decline on the group health insurance side.

The downside to attempting to purchase a group health insurance policy in the state of Florida is that it can be very expensive. Think of it in terms of: the more potentially unhealthy people that the insurance company has to give health insurance to (group health insurance) the higher the premiums will be as opposed to where the insurance company can pick and choose who they will accept for health insurance (individual health insurance).

The third Florida health insurance option available to the self employed is for those that are functioning as a sole proprietor. Florida self employed sole proprietors can apply for a Florida guaranteed issue small group health plan. The Florida guaranteed issue small group health plans has an open enrollment period only during the month of August.

Florida self employed health insurance can be a somewhat tricky area to navigate without the help of a licensed independent Florida health insurance agent. There are also many different ways to save money in taxes – one of which being the ability to deduct your health insurance premiums paid on Schedule C of your tax return against and up to your Schedule C income (Meaning that even if you don’t itemize [Schedule A] you can still deduct your health insurance premiums paid all the way up to your Schedule C income!).

Should Health Insurance Be Nationalized?

February 5th, 2010

The big debate in politics for the last 8 years or so is whether to nationalize health care. Many people feel that heath insurance and health care is a god given right and the government should take it over. The problem with that is that the government is usually a failure at whatever it does. Is the government social security system a success? No, as it will be bankrupt before I have the chance to get any of my money back. Are the government programs to help the poor a success? No, as we have just as many poor people as we ever have had. Does the government do a good job in times of tragedy? I think the victims of hurricane Katrina would answer no to that.

The only thing the government does well is to police the nation and to defend our country. Of course even that will have many people in disagreement. Why then should we ever attempt to nationalize health-care? If the government fails at almost everything it does, why on earth should we hand over the whole health care system too? The United States right now has the best health care in the world and this is evidenced by the fact that many people fly here to have their operations done. If you are in trouble health wise, the US is THE place to get the best doctors and care.

If the health care system were nationalized, finding health insurance for the self employed would no longer be a problem. That would be a good thing but what would be the quality of that care? Right now, people in Canada and Britain have to wait in line for their health care. Do you want to wait in line to see a doctor? Waiting in line is OK at the supermarket but not at a doctors office or hospital.

It is true that some people have trouble finding quality health insurance and especially self employed health insurance. It is easier to get health insurance if you work for a company that offers it. However, the system works for most of us and we do have the best health care in the world. Why would we jeopardize that? If we did nationalize it, more people might have access to it but the quality would go down. There is always a price and no system that will work for every single person.

The bottom line is that there is no perfect system where everyone will have the best health care at a price they can afford. Nothing in life works that way. America was born by people who wanted to limit the influence of government in their lives. I say, leave things the way they are. We don’t want to make them worse!

Health Insurance Plans For Self Employed

December 21st, 2009

Self employed health insurance plans should include all of the important coverage components you likely enjoyed as a full-time employee. A smart first step when preparing to put together your own medical insurance package would be speaking with your former employer’s human resources representatives about their coverage plans so you can find something very similar.

One time saving option to consider is simply setting up with your exact same coverage plan as provided by your employer. The federal government makes this possible through a nifty program called COBRA. The COBRA initiative allows you to get the same coverage at group health insurance rates – the same rates your employer paid.

If you do decide to obtain your own unique medical coverage package, you should take extra time to compare and contrast your former health coverage with any new plans you consider. Involve your spouse in this decision-making process to insure that all matters are handled properly. There is really nothing worse than switching to a health insurance plan for self employed individuals only to find out later that you do not have the same vision coverage, you have a higher deductible, or you must pay double in co-pay visits to the doctor.

You want your switch to be as seamless as possible, so you should also be sure you time things out to be sure there is not a gap in coverage. Also, make sure you and your family members do not have pre-existing conditions before signing up with your new premium provider.Of course, there is much more than just health or medical to consider. You will also want to think about dental, liability, disability, and other miscellaneous types of coverage.

A good self employed insurance plan will make these coverage options very easy for you. Always start by assessing your needs now and into the future. Although no insurance system is perfect, you can make your life a lot easier down the road by picking the right plan today. How to choose an insurance plan is not an easy thing to explain as the process is different for everyone.

In my humble opinion, the web is easily the best place to search for self employed insurance information. Your goal should be to find targeted websites that deliver expert-level information on health insurance to make your life easier. Avoid websites that ask for lots of personal information upfront. You want to be sure you understand the general issues and needs first.
